How Is The Pediatric Neurotrauma Lab Leading Innovative Research?
The Pediatric Neurotrauma Lab, co-directed by Andrew Reisner, MD and Laura Blackwell, PhD, is a multi-institutional collaboration between Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University. Our mission is to establish a basic science research program focused on pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). We work to improve the health and quality of life of children living with acute neurological injuries, specifically TBI
Through our large volume of pediatric neurotrauma patients, we use translational research to improve patient care. We collaborate with local and national researchers of all disciplines to advance the understanding and treatment of TBI.

Patient Stories & Highlights
Saydee’s story
Saydee sustained a concussion and a black eye and chipped her teeth during a softball game. After being treated through the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Concussion Program, she is now back on the field and ready to play.
2015 November Comeback Athlete: Holland Carlton
After a concussion landed Holland at the doctor’s office, a CT scan revealed the last thing she and her family expected—a brain tumor. In March 2015, Holland underwent a nine-hour surgery to remove the growth. After the procedure, she had to relearn routine daily activities at the Children’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Program. She is now back on the field playing soccer and is preparing for the upcoming tryouts for the varsity team.
